The reference to Egypt is not the independent nation that has ruled for 3,000 years. At this point in history Egypt had been conquered by Alexander the Great and under Roman rule for about 35 years at this point.  Egypt represented a place where Herod could not reach and where Jesus would be safe until welcomed home to Nazareth.
